As the countdown to the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo begins, with only 137 days remaining, preparations are in full swing. The Expo is set to take place from September 5 to November 4, 2026, at multiple locations including Dolsan Jinmo district and surrounding islands. This event aims to showcase the ecological significance of islands and the sea, under the theme "Islands, Connecting the Sea and the Future."

The main venue for the Expo, currently under construction in Dolsan Jinmo, is expected to be completed by July 2026. This site selection has sparked some controversy, as it differs from the 2012 Expo location, which was praised for its infrastructure. Critics, including former politicians, have questioned the decision, arguing that the existing facilities should have been utilized instead. The organizing committee, led by Kim Jong-ki, explained that 70% of the 2012 Expo facilities were leased and uncertain for reuse, making the new site a more viable option.

The domestic response

On April 21, 2026, the Yeosu Coast Guard conducted a safety inspection at the main venue. Chief Kim Ki-yong emphasized the importance of thorough safety management and readiness for emergencies, particularly for potential maritime and coastal accidents during the Expo. He stated, "We will maintain a state of emergency readiness to prevent any maritime safety incidents during the Expo." This proactive approach aims to address concerns about safety as the event draws near.

In addition to safety measures, the Expo organizing committee is also ramping up promotional efforts. On the same day, they signed a cooperation agreement with Bohae Brewery, which plans to attach promotional labels for the Expo on 500,000 bottles of its local soju brand, 'Yeosu Sea.' This initiative is set to start in mid-May 2026 and aims to strengthen regional identity and highlight ecological values, featuring the endangered finless porpoise on the labels. The committee's chair, Jeong Hyun-gu, noted, "The support from local businesses like Bohae Brewery is a great boost for our promotional efforts."

The regional angle

The choice of Dolsan Jinmo as the main venue has stirred local debates and raised questions about logistical arrangements for visitors. The organizing committee is working closely with local authorities to improve infrastructure, including KTX train services and shuttle buses, to facilitate smooth transportation during the Expo. Minister of the Interior and Safety, Yoon Ho-jung, highlighted the need for a balance between public access and visitor convenience, stating, "We need to find ways to harmonize the daily lives of citizens with the influx of visitors during the event."

As the Expo approaches, the Yeosu region is preparing to capitalize on the event's potential economic impact. The Expo is expected to attract international attention, which could boost tourism and local businesses. With the theme focused on ecological awareness, it also aligns with global efforts to address environmental issues, making it relevant beyond South Korea.

As the preparations continue, the organizing committee remains committed to ensuring a successful Expo. With safety inspections and promotional campaigns underway, Yeosu is gearing up to welcome the world in just a few months. The event a platform for cultural exchange and a celebration of the beauty and importance of islands and marine ecosystems.

The Yeosu World Islands Expo is set to open on September 5, 2026, and will run until November 4, 2026, across various locations in Yeosu, including the newly constructed main venue in Dolsan Jinmo district.
