LG Energy Solution (LG에너지솔루션) is reportedly on the verge of finalizing a supply contract for its new 46-series cylindrical batteries with BMW. If successful, this agreement would mark the first time LG Energy Solution supplies batteries for BMW's fully electric vehicles, a notable expansion from its previous role supplying batteries only for BMW's mild hybrid electric vehicles (MHEV).
According to reports from the battery industry on October 30, the anticipated contract is valued at approximately 10 trillion won ($7.5 billion) and is expected to span around ten years. The company has been producing these batteries at its Ochang plant, with an annual production capacity of approximately 8 GWh. An additional plant in Arizona is set to begin production by the end of this year, with a capacity of 36 GWh. There are also plans under consideration for establishing a production line for the 46-series in Poland.
A spokesperson for LG Energy Solution stated, "We cannot confirm details related to our customers," in response to inquiries about the BMW supply contract. Meanwhile, BMW has also selected China's EVE Energy as a supplier for the 46-series batteries, and Samsung SDI is expected to join the ranks of suppliers for this new battery line.
