On October 24, a solemn ceremony took place at the Commonwealth War Memorial in Gapyeong, South Korea, marking the 75th anniversary of the Korean War battle that saw troops from Commonwealth nations defend against overwhelming odds. The event was organized by the British Embassy and attended by approximately 250 dignitaries, including ambassadors from the four Commonwealth countries—United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand—as well as South Korea's Minister of Veterans Affairs, Kwon Oh-eul (권오을), and Army Chief of Staff, Kim Kyu-hwa (김규하).
Among the attendees were 11 surviving veterans—nine from abroad and two from South Korea—along with 19 family members of deceased soldiers. This gathering was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Battle of Gapyeong, where soldiers fought valiantly to uphold peace and freedom.
The ceremony began with the entrance of the United Nations (UN) color guard, followed by a reading of the battle's overview and a floral tribute. To conclude the event, the Air Force's special flight team, the Black Eagles, performed a commemorative flyover, honoring those who fell during the fierce fighting in Gapyeong.
Local media reported on the significance of the event, emphasizing the historical importance of the Battle of Gapyeong. This battle, which occurred from April 23 to 25, 1951, saw the 27th Brigade of Commonwealth forces successfully repel an attack by over five times their number of Chinese troops. Their defense was instrumental in maintaining the UN forces' position along the central front and safeguarding Seoul.
The enduring legacy of the Commonwealth soldiers was highlighted by Gapyeong County officials. Kim Mi-sung (김미성), the deputy mayor of Gapyeong, stated, "The sacrifices made by the Commonwealth veterans are the reason for today’s Republic of Korea. We will do our utmost to honor and forever commemorate their dedication." This sentiment was echoed throughout the ceremony, as participants paid tribute to the bravery and commitment of those who served.
The commemoration also resonated beyond South Korea, as it marked a moment of reflection for the Commonwealth nations involved in the Korean War. The event underscored the historical ties between these countries and their continued commitment to remembering their shared sacrifices during a tumultuous period. Notably, this year coincided with the 100th anniversary of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, adding another layer of significance to the observance.

Since 1976, these veterans have pooled their pensions to provide scholarships to students in Gapyeong, demonstrating their lasting commitment to the region and its future generations. This year, scholarships were awarded to 68 students: 28 from Gapyeong Middle and High Schools, and 40 from Gapyeong North Middle School, supported by their counterparts in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
The Battle of Gapyeong remains a symbol of international cooperation and sacrifice, and the 75th anniversary serves as a reminder of the enduring friendships forged during the Korean War.
